This is a short story. It’s not a story of slacks, or jeans, or maxi dresses. While all of those items go to great lengths to make you fabulous, this story isn’t about what’s long. It’s a story of how to get a little extra wear out of a tried and true warm weather staple. Whether they slink in the back of your closet to come forth only for yard work and poolside capering or rush boldly to the fore as soon as the thermometer rises above 65, shorts are a part of the season of sprinklers and lemonade.
This year shorts can go more places than ever before because fits and fabrics have dressed them up, so you can too. From silky tap pants to classic khaki there’s a variety in price and style to fit any wardrobe. Of course you can’t forget about good old fashioned denim—even the cut-off form can be dolled up and taken to new heights with the right accessories.
As for the inevitable question: Dare I wear short shorts? In general, if you work hard on those gams—go for it! Besides nobody said you have to wear hot pants. If you’re still comfortable in a short skirt, wear the shorter shorts. They go where their non-culotte counterparts can more modestly and with a hint of fun you never get from a mini. The skirt length you are most comfortable wearing can dictate the length you choose in a pair of shorts better than any “fashion rule”. That said, some may be more comfortable in a close relation to shorts—either the crop or the capri.
One nice thing about Huntsville in summer is that it’s a casual town. Try styling shorts the way you style jeans in the fall for a fun, fresh take on casual cool that can take you to a lazy afternoon on the patio at Cantina Laredo or to a backyard barbecue with a little extra panache. A pretty blouse or a light jacket and you’re set for a crisp look that’s fun and just a tiny bit cheeky, ahem, without showing any cheek.
